Last September, we put on a book drive to collect books to send to a school in Tanzania, Africa. Our goal at the time was to fill one suitcase with 50 books. Instead of 50, we were overwhelmed by the community's generosity! We collected hundreds of books, hundreds of pounds of books! This past January, the books were delivered!
The school is located in Kitarini, Tanzania, which is in the Longido region. The school received the books with open arms. Pia and Sune, the missionaries who are dedicated to the Gospel in Tanzania and began the school with their own efforts, were very excited and thankful for the donation.
Angela Cisneros, Manager of K-Jon's Fine Jewelers, said "We want to say ‘thank you’ to the community for their hard work on this project. Without the generosity of our community, we would not have been able to provide this support and encourage education in such a worthwhile manner.”
This book drive is in connection with the Gemstone Roundtable that K-Jon's Fine Jewelers hosts annually in September. Roger Dery, world-traveler, gemstone cutter, and movie star, will be at the helm. Roger's years of experience gives him a unique perspective on the industry and an event such as this. He is able to meet the miners, develop relationships with the mine owners, and even befriend the country's influential leaders. His current projects are working on a film to document the journey of a gemstone from mine to market as well as training the local people in gemstone faceting.
The Gemstone Roundtable will display colored gemstones such as sapphire, ruby, sphalerite, spodumene, and tsavorite. It's an invitation only event, though appointments can be made throughout the day to meet with Roger.
