Gemstones in your jewelry

When calculating the gold value of your jewelry, you need to subtract an estimate of how much your stones weigh. This can vary from 0.5 grams for a couple small stones to 3 or more grams for large or many stones.

Troy Ounces

Troy ounces are a little different from “normal” (Avoirdupois) ounces. Troy ounces are pretty much just used for jewelry, so don’t assume your baking scale will tell you how many ounces your jewelry is. It will be different:

1 Troy oz = 1.097 oz Avoirdupois
1 Troy oz = 31.103 g
1 Avoirdupois oz = 28.3495 g
