My diamond ring is snagging on my clothes! What should I do?

Many times, we have people come in our store in Atascadero with a ring that has a prong that is snagging.  Our customers say the ring snags on clothes or blankets, anything fabric.  It sometimes may seem like it to us, but this is not an anomaly confined to Paso Robles, Atascadero, and the SLO North County.  You may wonder "is it normal for my ring to snag?"  It most certainly is, but it usually means a problem is on the horizon or has already arrived.  Get the ring checked soon! The snagging problem can be one of many things, but is almost always an issue with a prong (the prong is the claw-like piece of gold that holds your diamond/gemstone in), and is many times one of these four issues:

1 - Broken/missing prong A broken/missing prong is a very serious problem!  The prong has been pulled off, gone forever, no longer securing your diamond. In this case, your diamond is vulnerable to falling out, if it hasn't done so already.  Immediately put your diamond ring into a zip-up plastic bag and bring it to our jewelry store in Atascadero to repair by doing a retip or reprong.

2 - Worn prong Worn prongs are less serious, but still grave.  The risk is that these thin prongs could get caught and broken off themselves.  If we don't retip the prongs soon, that will eventually happen, and therefore, your diamond would, like the first situation, be vulnerable to loss.

3 - Lifted prong This is a less-problematic, but still worrisome situation.  If a "healthy" and strong prong gets pulled, it could get lifted up off the surface of the diamond.  The prong is supposed to be flush, down on the top of the diamond, in order to hold it in.  If the prong is lifted, it's very easy to snag it again to the point where the diamond can fall out.  Definitely get it checked by our SLO north county jewelers soon!

4 - Dented/scratched prong Dents and scratches are not truly problematic, except for the fact that they are a bother and snag on clothing!  We can usually refinish your ring in our Atascadero jewelry workshop for a nominal fee, and that should resolve the problems. Read more about our Repair Services, and come into our store and visit our jewelers.  We have two full-time bench jewelers (aka goldsmiths) that each have over 30 years of hands-on experience working with high-value jewelry items.  We serve Atascadero, Templeton, and Paso Robles with Jewelry Repair services.
